How south philly goes....

well, as i noticed, we phil's (well us south phil's) have a very unique dialect, so i thought i share, hopefully you'll have a laugh or two. btw, this is all really used like this and said like this. Please note that since south philly is prodominatly Irish and Italian that most of this carrys one of those two accents.

Ack A Mee: Acme, a local supermarket.

Addytood: Attitude.

Bin Dare: I've been there.

Sener Siddy: Center City.

Dah Iggles: Philadelphia Eagles.

Dah Fills: Philadelphia Phillies.

Dah Fliers: Philadelphia Flyers.

Dah Semi Sixes: Philadelphia Seventy-Sixers.

Downdashore: The beach ( New Jersey shore).

Goddago: I have to go.

Goes: Use in place of "said," as in "He goes, `I'm not feelin' so good.'"

Guh Head: Yes, you may do that.

Jeet Yet?: Have you eaten yet?

JeezTake: Cheesesteak. ( a good ol' Philly cheesesteak, is something that induces great pleasure well adding 5 to 9 pounds. its best served greasy. )

Sammich: Sandwich.

Siddy Haw: City Hall.

Skeeve: Hatred/disgust. (Example: "I skeeve raw scrapple.")

Skowne On?: What's going on?

Sow Shtreet: South Street.

Trawley: Trolley.

Weubin?: Where have you been?

Whachoolookinat?: What are you looking at? (Often in an aggressive way.)

Almost every person in philly is a fan of the Eagles. btw, during football season round here, dallas cowboys or NY giants apparel will get you harrassed and even "jumped".

Almost every one hates Outsiders, so dont act like one.

Dont say hi to anyone inless its someone you know, or risk injury.

Careful where you tread, one wrong turn in the Rich and preppy neighborhoods and your now at gunpoint in a horrible neighborhood. (not a exaggeration at all.)

if you drive in philly , without PA tags (especially if they are NJ tags) expect some serious tuanting.

Philly isnt a bad place if you know where your heading and your with someone from philly.

Historical:

Liberty Bell (Philadelphia's Statue of Liberty)

Betty Ross house (flag maker)

Others:

Center City (shopping area, literally the center of the city.

South Street (south Philly's official(?) Northern Border, runs from about 8th and south to front and south) it is a shopping strip, Bar area, and cultural explosion home to the famous Condom Kingdom store)

Geno's and Pat's (rival food places that both contend for philly's best Cheesesteak.)

Italian Market ( outdoor market place orginally home to many italian stores, gradually though, has become more asian yet it has retained its name.)

The Lakes ( a park area otherwise called FDR Park, home to FDR park, featured in Tony Hawks proving grounds 3. also has baseball fields, picnic Areas, and tennis Courts, also the 4 lakes.)

so they don't take kindly to outsiders would be typical american if you have that view

but thats just because i am a damned ecologist , and like everybody knows ecologists always talk a lot of crap

Ohw ohw! By the way.... Americans are actually west-europeans who moved to the US. So basicly we are all Americans...most people outside of the US just don't know how to express themselfs in what they call English...But then again, the question would be...how come the english language became so dominant? Maybe, if the Netherlands didnt sell their land, we might all have spoken Dutch.... Uhuh uhuh

Actually Americans are people from the Land Masses of America such as South American and North America. a American can have different ethnic background, for example i myself have native American blood in me (Cherokee) and am not any less American for it. And since Native Tribes like the Cherokee are well, native, it'd be very hard to make a assumption that they are from Western Europe. Also, just to be annoying i felt it important to point out that basically not everyone is American, for to be American one would have to Live in the Americas or be born within those boundary.

I would say this is like what we use up here in Massachusetts but id be lying. Some of these phrases are used, but most of this we speak formally.

well Boston, New York, and Philadelphia are the Biggest NE Cities, so i would imagine that have some similar take, now i dunno were you were/are is Mass. but depending on how close you are to Boston its dialect's FOE might be reaching you =]
